Empower the youth with skills today, and they will build a better world tomorrow
Parsa district in Madesh Province is one of Nepal’s most climate-vulnerable areas, where communities in Paterwa Sugauli Rural Municipality face recurring disasters such as forest fires, flash floods, and heat waves. These disasters not only damage homes and roads but also destroy farmland, the primary source of livelihood for most residents. Fragile mud and wood homes, firewood cooking, and constant wildlife threats from nearby Chitwan National Park make daily survival a struggle for many families.
In this challenging environment, youth emerge as changemakers. Among them is Firoj, a 25-year-old from Parsa, who manages a small farm with his family. Despite financial struggles that forced him to pause his studies. ActionAid encouraged him to resume his education and later supported him with NPR 25,000 (USD 187) to start small grocery shop. His store now provides steady income for his household while he continues to serve as a dedicated volunteer.
Beyond improving his own life, Firoj has become an inspiring young leader through the Samata Youth Hub, a platform of 30 youth members in each ward of Paterwa Sugauli RM supported by ActionAid. With training in first aid, disaster management, and climate justice, he and his peers have transformed into first responders for their community. When disasters struck a house fire in the village or the tragic death of a man in a tiger attack, Firoj and other youth mobilized resources and extended immediate assistance. The Youth Hub initiated a plantation campaign, planting 550 saplings across the municipality. Their collective efforts have also addressed harmful social practices, reducing child marriage, domestic violence, substance abuse, and gambling in their locality.
“Before joining the Samata Youth Hub, I didn’t believe my voice mattered. Now, with training and support, I respond to disasters, advocate against social evils, and lead climate justice initiatives that inspire hope for a better future."
